wavread(‘crying baby’)

As a engineer I wanted to see numbers, a sound wave propagating into my ear doesn’t tell me so much, so I used Matlab’s wavread function to convert the audio file (44.1 kHz, 16 bit) into a time series. An excerpt of the 60 seconds long time series can be seen on the left image below. Until yesterday night I didn’t know of the existence of wavread, but “Thank you son!”. We just see an envelope wave carrying a bunch of high frequency waves. The normal thing to do here would be to look into the power spectrum of the signal, which I did. Due to the high noise content I applied Welch’s method to extract the main players in the cry attack of my son, which can be seen on the right image below.

The interesting thing here is that we see the most energy withing frequencies of 750Hz, 2kHz and 4kHz. I hold the result of my wife’s audiometry in my hand and it tells me that her hearing is very bad (almost deaf) on one of her ears for frequencies below 6kHz, i.e. she doesn’t experience the same (full) joy as I do when our little starts crying. What a pitty for her!
