Soccer for nerds

Haven’t read these papers yet, but will do as soon as I find time.

I really enjoy writing rebuttals to referees who have a problem with manuscripts I am sending in or who have constructive comments. Having said that I really wonder how this paper here got accepted. I haven’t seen a withdrawal of a paper before, so now I know how it is announced: here

Den Wald vor lauter Bäumen nicht sehen …

A common German phrase reads: “not to see the wood for the trees”. I guess it is also know to non-German speakers? I just found this very trivial and easy Matlab command line, which makes my equivalent lines look very stupid and complicated:

a= [1; 4; 6; 8; 12]; k=9;

[min_difference, array_position] = min(abs(a – k))

These treasures make my day!

EXCEL or how Microshit makes money

I hate Microsoft and EXCEL. WORD and POWERPOINT on the otherhand are better than a pen and a paper. EXCEL however is the most useless application I have in my entire life used and unfortunately still have to use, because I can’t always have Matlab or Mathematica installed on every computer I have or use. Things which take  minutes take 2 hours on EXCEL, because EXCEL has the habit to use 32000 rows instead of 3, although 31997 of them are empty. But why keep them as they are, why not taking it into account and saving it. Of course it looks better to  have a 32 MB EXCEL file instead of a 4kb ASCII file, although the content is the same. And adding labels is the most natural thing in EXCEL; do you know someone using EXCEL 2008? Ask him how he adds x or y labels to his plots. I mean the part before the 1 hour waiting procedure that allows one to enter a letter. I have sent a bunch of emails to Microsoft over the years via the error message send stuff, which seems to be as useful as all their other sh**.

I started around 19:30 to check import 5 ASCII files into EXCEL and to just plot them, no computation, no adding no subtraction, just plotting. It is 22 now and I am just at th edge to take a valium pill or to through out my computer. I just had to releave my chest: I hate you EXCEL, how can you sleep at night BILL? HOW? All your money and the charity is for nothing! Make something useful instead!

Mathematica for Sheep

Tele2 is one of the leading telecommunication companies in Sweden, and they are currently running a number of quite funny TV ads: [1, 2, 3]. Anyway, for those of you who are sheep or are sitting in an internet caffee and want to solve an integration, here is a nice Mathematica online integration tool. You never know when you might need it 🙂

University of Melbourne & Bowling

Still alive!

Quite busy and aggressive, but still alive! Visa (after my russian nightmare, that was the first I did) and tickets for Melbourne are issued. Will spend a half day in Kuala Lumpur to make the trip not too long. That was mainly the reason I updated my cam, of course I had to tell something else add home to justify the spent money, but … you can’t go to Kuala Lumpur and Melbourne with an old cam, can you? Tickets for Germany, Berlin, are also booked, Conference as well as 50th wedding anniversary of my wifes’ grandparents in East-Bavaria, 20 km from the Czech border. 2 days with East-German family will probably give me no other choice then trying cross the border and by some cheap sweets. This is probably my last blog entry until I am in one of the aforementioned places, due to a huge lack of time.
